The Kerala Library Association is planning to honour Dr. Shibu Ray, Assistant Librarian, CUSAT and   Dr. Jainamma, Librarian, Ilahia College of Engineering and Technology, Muvattupuzha, (formerly Librarian Gr.I, M.A. College of Engineering, Kothamangalam) on award of Ph.D, from the Cochin University of Science and Technology and the Open International University, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, respectively. The function will be held at the Department of Applied Economics auditorium on Thursday, 23.9.2010 at 2 PM.
Adv. K. Mohanachandran, Member of Syndicate, CUSAT, will be the chief guest and he will present mementoes to the awardees.

After the function, there will be a talk, jointly organized by the University Library, CUSAT, and the KLA Ernakulam Region, on ‘Towards a Blog’ by Mr. Binu A., Lecturer, Department of Information Technology, Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology, Ernakulam.

Attention LIS Professionals & Students !
UGC NET EXAM: COACHING CLASSES (Batch II)
In the emerging scenario in the LIS domain, be it practicing librarianship or teaching profession, PhD is fast emerging as the ‘default qualification’ for a reasonably good entry-level post or for career development while in service. So for both the new entrants and those who are already in service, it has become an absolute necessity. Further, the fact that not only for acquiring PhD, but even for entry into the middle-level managerial posts and for promotion to those posts, NET is mandatory.

UGC stipulations for such placements/promotions are strictly followed in the universities and affiliated colleges across the country. Emergence of new universities and other institutions of advanced learning & research open up more avenues for placements to senior level posts. We are going to witness a boom in the educational institutions in the country as a result of the recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission.

This scenario leads to a growing demand for PhDs/NET qualified personnel in the job market as against a relatively lesser supply of qualified hands! Loss of opportunities while in service for want of a doctoral degree adds to the agony and disillusionment of many professionals among our fraternity.

The best solution to overcome the situation is to have more PhDs & NET qualified personnel amongst our professionals. But the distressing fact is that in spite of the increasing number of candidates appearing for the UGC NET Exam in the recent past, the success rate is still far below satisfactory level.

A systematic learning programme with a structured training mechanism is sure to change the situation dramatically.
Having conceived this idea, Kerala Library Association initiated a Training Programme to coach the aspiring candidates for the NET Exam in Library & Information Science in February 2010 aimed at those professionals who had plan to appear for the UGC NET Examination in June 2010. The response was overwhelming. With a galaxy of well-qualified subject experts with decades of experience in LIS teaching, research, and practice, we could successfully organize the programme, which won acclaim from all quarters. All the serious and academically interested participants had poured encomiums on the meticulous organization of the sessions and its effectiveness. We are quite certain that the outcome would be spectacular.

Drawing inspiration from the first programme, KLA proposes to organize a second session of coaching commencing from 12 September 2010, targeting the next NET Exam scheduled for December 2010.
